THE DESIGN PROCESS

Actions taken to create unlimited possibilities.

The design process of a graphic designer is a series of actions taken to convert ideas into reality, when creating a product or solving a problem or to take steps forward in in unclear path.

My design process

As a graphic designer I use my design process to help guide, problem solve and develop conceptual ideas on behalf of my client to ensure unique and legible design products. Below is an example of my design process, when designing a logo.

Review of the design brief

The first step to my design process is to meet with my clients to discuss the project and look over the brief (the clients overview of requirements). At this point, I like to gather as much information as I can about the client’s expectations, their company's mission, vision, and goals etc. As well as a full overview of the products or services offered by the business. I really like to go beyond the surface of what a company does, this ensures I can deliver the true message a company is trying to make.

Receiving a good detailed design brief from a client can insure I understand what fundamental information is required to begin a project. It also helps me to estimate a time frame and costing for the client so they can make informed decisions for their final products.

Research, brainstorming and sketching

My next step is to begin my research and brainstorming. I begin with a more in-depth research of my client and their products, target market and competitors. Doing this ensures there is no miss communication. Finally I research fonts, colour, typographical hierarchy and any illustrative styling or imagery needed for the project. At this point I have a very good idea of the direction that should be taken for the project.

Throughout my research stage I make quick unrefined sketches and annotations as I come up with ideas, this helps me to try out multiple ideas—ensuring the project is fully explored.

Building on concepts

At this stage I take a selection of my best concepts (3/5) forward to be developed. Still working with pen and ink, I work a variety of ideas up in scamp format (larger refined detail). These sketches will include detailed references to font selections, colours, layouts and any visual elements that were researched earlier.

I find this is the best way to come up with as many variations as possible—giving my clients a good choice of selection.

Presenting and refinement

At this point, I request a meeting with my clients. I show them the design drafts and ask them to make a selection to go forward with and to provide any feedback they may have.

With a final design selected by the client, the next phase begins—refinement! This is done using specialist design software to create the artwork and implement any colour selection, graphics and typographical elements the design has.

Revisions

Once refined, I then go back to the client to present the digital design. It is not usual for clients to want to make slight adjustments to the final product. Like many graphic artists, At this point I allow up to two rounds of changes that my client may request, this could be a change of colour, fonts, layouts etc. thereafter any further changes come at additional cost.

Final delivery

Now! It is time to deliver the final product. My goal is to leave my client elated with their product. Once I am in receipt of payment, I supply all my clients with a final product “package” for their benefit.
