The street art form with freedom of expression.
Urban sketching otherwise known as ink wash illustrations, is a creative form of art that is perfect for all creatives of any skill set making it an absolute must for anyone to give it a go.
What is urban art sketching?
Urban sketching is the act of drawing while on location in areas that you live in or traveling to. You can sketch out your local market, museums, streets and parks—you name it, you can sketch it! It’s a great way to document the world around you in your own unique and expressive way.
It doesn’t matter! That you can’t draw a straight line or that you’ve smudged the ink on the page, the Beauty of this style of illustration lies within its loose informal markings and scratchy imperfections–each element adding the charm, charisma and personality of the artist who created it.
What makes it so fun?
I love urban sketching because, I allows me to be create beautiful and expressive with art without implementing the strict disciplines otherwise needed finer artwork styles. There are no rules, no rights or wrongs, and no mistakes when sketching, it’s just sketching, art in its true raw from.
Peter Sheeler
There is no formal training necessary to start out in urban sketching, However… if you want to learn, I do recommend checking illustrator Peter Sheeler, one of my favour illustrators, he effortlessly creates beautiful miniature line and watercolour wash paintings. From both memory and photographic reference.
Sheeler is an entirely self-taught professional water-colour artist, I first discovered peter when researching illustrative styles in my first year at design school, I found his style so inspirational and profoundly therapeutic. Watching him has taught me a lot about the style and tools needed. He has also given me confidence and belief that creating beautiful art or illustrations is achievable by all, no what the ability.
It truly is an art form with freedom.
